STAN BOWLES
Stan Bowles is a former professional footballer who was as famous for his exploits at the bar and the racetrack as on the pitch. Born in Manchester, Bowles had George Best as one of his early mentors. He joined Queens Park Rangers in 1972 where he took over the Number Ten shirt and the responsibilities for hell-raising from club legend Rodney Marsh. He went on to make 250 appearances for the club. He played only 5 times for England, possibly due to his tendency to fall out with managers (his caps came under three different bosses). He allegedly blew over quarter of a million pounds on gambling during his career. A former manager said of him: "If he could pass a bookies like he passes a football, he'd be a very rich man."
